The Coca-Cola Route

Marangu.

Climbing Kilimanjaro's Marangu Route remains a popular choice for trekkers seeking a shorter, challenging itinerary. Known as the only route with hut accommodation instead of camping, it follows the same scenic trail up and down, passing through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and onto the summit. Available in 5-day and 6-day itineraries, the 6-day option adds an extra acclimatization day for improved summit success. This straightforward Kilimanjaro trek is ideal for climbers with limited time seeking cosy huts and classic mountain scenery.

Which trek type fits you?

We offer daily departures via both group and private treks. To see which type suits you best:

Group departure

Pros

  • Lower per-person price - the clearest upside when budget matters most.
  • Join existing groups - if you don't want to trek alone, we can pair you with other trekkers.
  • Built-in social experience - meet fellow trekkers, share stories around the camp, and form new lasting friendships.

Cons

  • Fixed pace and itinerary - Itineraries are pre-set, so trekkers move together as a group rather than at their own preferred pace.
  • Less solitude - shared tents, communal meals, limited alone time while on the trail

Private party

Pros

  • Customizable - you can set your own pace and customise the itinerary and duration of the
  • Personalised attention - the guides and crew focus only on you, which is better for photography and dietary needs.
  • Only guests you invite - quieter camps and company you are already comfortable with.

Cons

  • Higher investment - the crew costs are not split with other trekkers, so the smaller the group, the higher the person package cost.
  • Isolating - for small groups, there are no built-in trekking companions, and you could feel lonely on longer treks.

If this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime investment for you, private often protects what you cannot redo — how you feel on the mountain every day.

Related FAQs

  • The 6-day itinerary is recommended without hesitation. The key difference between the two is an acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut, where your guide will typically lead you on a short hike up to a higher altitude before returning to sleep lower, a technique that gives your body a crucial extra window to adjust before the summit push. Skip that day on the 5-day option, and you're essentially asking your body to do the same job in significantly less time. The 5-day option exists for those with genuinely unavoidable time constraints, and experienced climbers with prior high-altitude exposure may manage it well. But if you're making the journey to Kilimanjaro, investing one extra day on the mountain is one of the simplest and most effective decisions you can make for your chances of standing on the summit.

  • Of all the routes on Kilimanjaro, the Marangu Route is the most practical option for climbing during the wetter months of April, May, and November. The hut accommodation keeps you dry and comfortable in a way that tented routes simply can't match on a rainy night. The trail itself is well-maintained and manageable even in wetter conditions, though waterproof gear remains essential at every stage. If your travel window falls in the rainy season and you still want to climb, Marangu is your best bet.

  • Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), occurs when the body doesn't have enough time to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels at high altitude. Symptoms can include headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and disturbed sleep, and can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness level. The Marangu Route's shorter itinerary means less time to acclimatise, which is why choosing the 6-day option over the 5-day is so important. Going slowly, staying well hydrated, and listening to your body and your guide are the most effective tools you have.

  • There are three main hut complexes on the Marangu Route: Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo. Each offers dormitory-style bunk beds with mattresses and pillows, communal dining areas where hot meals are served, and basic washroom facilities. They are simple and functional rather than luxurious, but having solid walls and a roof over your head, especially on colder, wetter nights, is a genuine advantage.

  • Summit night is the most demanding part of the entire climb and begins very early, typically around midnight to 1 am from Kibo Hut at 4,700m. You'll ascend steeply in the dark, navigating loose scree toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim, before continuing along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. It's cold, it's slow, and it tests you mentally as much as physically. Reaching the summit in time to watch the sunrise over the African plains below is one of the most extraordinary experiences the mountain has to offer.
