A Rift Valley gem — groundwater forest, soda lake, and the famous tree-climbing lions — in a compact day or two.
Manyara's narrow strip between escarpment and lake concentrates diverse habitats: mahogany forest, acacia woodland, and open floodplains.
Flamingo flushes, elephant in the forest, and lion lounging in umbrella thorns make it an ideal soft start before longer drives north.
Small, vertical and quick to see — which is its argument, not its weakness. Half a day here fits neatly around the drive between Arusha and the crater.
You enter through dense forest fed by springs from the escarpment — fig, mahogany, and troops of baboon two hundred strong. It looks nothing like the rest of the northern circuit.

Where the floodplain meets the soda lake. Numbers swing enormously with water level: some years tens of thousands of flamingo, some years almost none. Worth asking us what it is doing before you build a trip around it.

A 370-metre canopy walk suspended up to eighteen metres in the forest. The only one of its kind in northern Tanzania, and the rare safari activity that works well for restless children.

An irrigated village at the base of the escarpment where more than a hundred ethnic groups farm side by side. Banana beer, rice paddies, and a flat easy ride. Half a day, and consistently the thing guests mention afterwards.

Manyara is one of the few national parks permitting night drives, and when lake levels allow, canoeing among hippo and waterbirds. Both are seasonal — ask before counting on them.
