A few questions

• Is Tarangire worth more than a day?−

  Between July and October, yes — two nights lets you reach the southern swamps, which is where the park stops feeling like a stopover. In the green months one full day is honestly enough unless you are birding.

• Should I stay inside the park or outside?+

  Inside for game-drive time; outside for walking and night drives, which the national park does not permit. The wildlife management areas on the eastern and western boundaries offer both activities and are about forty minutes from the gate.

• When are the elephants at their best?+

  September and October, when the river is the only water left. Herds of over a hundred are routine. By December they have dispersed north into the Maasai steppe and you will see a fraction of that.

• How does it combine with the rest of the circuit?+

  It is the natural first or last stop — two hours forty from Kilimanjaro airport, and on the road to everything else. Most of our northern itineraries open here so guests are on game the day they land.

• Are the tree-climbing lions real?+

  Yes, in the southern swamps, though it is opportunistic rather than a daily habit. Lake Manyara has the bigger reputation for it and, in our experience, delivers it less often than Tarangire does.
